Jasmine:
Jasmine is a grump. I will admit it.
In fact, when I first saw her at the horse auction she was in a
frightened lather. Screaming and pacing, she was actively trying
to climb over the box stall she had been put into. So it is safe
to say that I was very surprised when the two riding instructors
that I had brought with me told me to bid on her when she came
into the auction ring. They said that they had gone back down
later and she had quieted down remarkably. Not only that, but
they had seen her ridden and she was quite nice.
Against my better judgment, I
bid on, and won Jasmine.
It didn't help Jasmine's reputation when she growled at the women
who's house we leave the auction horses for their isolation
period when we first bring them home. "Why on earth did you buy
that one?" Karen asked pointing at the little chestnut mare on
the other side of the barn. True to form, Jasmine was looking at
us menacingly and protecting her new found friend (soon to be
named Hilda). I shrugged. "We will see" I said. And see we
did.
Regardless of a bumpy beginning, Jasmine as turned into quite a
find. Despite her grumpy disposition, Jasmine is a real work
horse. She is always in her best behavior under tack.
She has smooth gaits and
beautiful willing jump. For several years after she first came to
us, Jasmine preformed very well on Show Team and took many
campers to their first group of horse shows. Now, in her older
years, Jasmine is a full time intermediate through beginner jump
horse, sometimes even filling in for walk, trot classes. Sadly,
Jasmine's friend Hilda did not stay at Cedar Lodge as long and
for a bit of time, Jasmine was by herself. Over the last couple
of years, Jasmine has palled up with Hattie, another Cedar Lodge
lifer. The pairing is genuinely unique. First, Jasmine "hates"
everyone else in pasture and is often seen putting herself
between another horse and Hattie who is absolutely at the bottom
of the pecking order. Secondly, Hattie has no other friends
and you will usually see her following Jasmine's tail in from
pasture, or Jasmine waiting at the gate for Hattie if she is held
in after turn out for a lesson. Jasmine is always a
favorite and always busy. Now and then those riding instructors
will wink at me when watching Jasmine and say "we told you so" I
can do nothing but nod and shrug. They were right. She was well
worth the risk.
