Merry Legs
There were a few
things that were obvious when Merry Legs came to live with us
from the horse auction: She was not very well trained. She liked
going fast. She had a wonderful personality. She was very, very
fat. So fat, in fact, that she looked just like the Thewell
ponies that you see on so many children's t-shirts these days.
Fortunate for us, that first summer my young niece who was 10 at
the time, took an immediate liking........or maybe tolerance at
least at first........to the chubby little pony and didn't mind
at all when we "stuck" her with Merry legs for the summer. I
don't think we could have kept Merry Legs with out Kendra's
patient care, but with the constant TLC, Merry Legs really
started to blossom.
By the end of
the summer, Kendra and Merry were showing and placing well, every
time out and a special kind of bond had formed. Something else had happened
by the end of the first summer. Merry Legs had gotten fatter! At
first we thought muscling and good health, but when Merry started
to turn aggressive in the pasture, kind of a "give me my personal
space!!!!" to the herd, we decided maybe it was time for a vet
examination. In Sept. our worse fears were realized. I had once
again bought a pregnant equine for the auction block! (why me?)
Having no history or clue to Merry's pass, we spent the year
guessing exactly what a smallish Grey pony would
reproduce............and when? The following May, Merry let us
know her big secret. A cute little pinto colt was the answer to
all questions. "Stormy" is still with us and with his 3 year old
birthday quickly approaching, he is presently being broke to
ride. Very soon, who knows, maybe he will have his own little
write up here. As for Merry, she continues to work hard at Cedar
Lodge. Merry works in show team and advanced jump classes, as she
still likes to go a bit quicker than we would desire. Kendra has
moved on to bigger......way bigger horses, but still says she has
a special place in her heart for her first really horse bond.
Merry, for her part, was able to keep her "womanly" figure
through child birth. I think the pictures speak for themselves as
to Merry love for her carrots!
