Vaulting
Cedar Lodge has had vaulting in their program since 1978 and over the
last couple of years, it has grown to be a very popular program.
Vaulting, a program of gymnastics on horseback, is offered to all campers,
twice a day, 5 days a week, regardless of their riding level or program.
Working first on the vaulting barrel, campers learn proper mounting and
dismounting, balance, and form, before moving on to our specially trained
vaulting horse. There, they are taught the same movements that they
practiced on the barrel at a stand still, walk, trot and finally,
sometimes a canter for very advanced vaulters. The vaulting horse is
controlled at all times by a lounger, who has the horse on a long line
called a "Lounge" line and controls the horse with voice commands. Vaulting
is a unique combination of horse, dance, drama and gymnastic skills. That
perhaps explains it's popularity. It appeals to many for many different
reasons.
Vaulting, though sounding and
looking difficult to the untrained eye, has proved to be extremely popular
with all ages and abilities. Vaulting has helped improve the rhythm,
confidence and balance of our more novice riders and has added an
additional riding challenge for our more advanced. Even the youngest most
inexperienced rider is able to maneuver a "Basic Seat" with in one
lesson.
Vaulting is a popular attraction on Sunday presentations and campers show
their skills in individual and group demonstrations.
Vaulting has become so popular at Cedar Lodge, that in 2006 CL added
Vaulting weekends to
it's year around schedule. These weekends are open to campers that are
interested in working on their vaulting during the off season, and are
serious about wanting to improve their skills. It is not a requirement that
you compete with Cedar Lodge if you want to come to a vaulting weekend.
They are geared for the serious vaulter, and applicants should be at least
an intermediate level vaulter to participate. If you are interested in a
vaulting weekend and wonder whether you qualify, please contact the camp
office for more information.
Campers that vault with Cedar Lodge
year around may chose to compete with the CL team as well. There are
special requirements for the CL team, and those interested to contact the
Cedar Lodge office.
