May UpdatesMay 13th:Huntington Horse show:9 Cedar Lodge Horses and riders set off early Sunday morning for a day in the sun at Jim and Marilyn Murphy's. Actually, if you count Laura Chess, fresh out a day of classes at Michigan University and her 2 students from Ann Arbor that also go to Cedar Lodge, the tally is more like 12 riders in all. Laura had brought Becca and Kat down to ride, and starting out from Cedar Lodge we had Taylor, Hilary and Ashley back for their second year of showing, Elizabeth, Mattie and Amanda for their first year, Kali and Kendra, our seasoned competitors, and Amy our .......very seasoned.......competitors. With Chris and Cathy on the ground, and a million parent's, we were well ready for the day's activities. The horses for the day were a variety of seasoned compaigners and newbies. Brenda, Mattie and Stormy were there for the second yearers, Kaden, Malarkey and Mouse took over the first yearers, and Chip and Gomer were there for the seasoned riders' entertainment. Rounding out the field was Earl, one of the Cedar Lodge boarded horses, who just might be working as a vaulting horse this summer. Earl was there for more experience away from home. The horse show work actually started on Saturday, as Kali, Kendra, Amy and Hillary set off on Saturday afternooon with Chip, Gomer, Earl, Mattie and Rylie for a little pre-show schooling. Often young horses take a bit to get used to a new place, and usually it's a smart idea to come in a day early to show them around the grounds and jump all the fences. Chip, Gomer and Earl schooled first and were super easy. Kendra showed Rylie around the grounds as it was our big girl's first time away from Cedar Lodge, ever. Then, as Kali and Hillary jumped Mattie, Amy hacked Rylie around at a trot. As Rylie had a strained tendon, she did not come back on Sunday to show. By the end of Sunday, there were many ribbons and only a few mishaps. Everyone came away proud of their accomplishments and feeling it was well worth the effort. It took most of Monday for most of us to recover, but by Tuesday we were back on our horses and preparing our thoughts for Cedar Lodge's June Schooling show, to too far away. |
